Crossroads field guides · Northern Pakistan · Landscape journeys
Beautiful places in Pakistan reward different kinds of travel. Hunza offers villages, orchards and mountain views; Baltistan combines lakes and heritage with high-country excursions; Fairy Meadows needs a more demanding approach. This guide helps you choose a coherent route rather than a rushed list of famous photographs.

Hunza: more than one viewpoint
Karimabad offers access to Baltit and Altit forts, old settlement paths and the surrounding orchard landscape. Give the forts and village walks their own time. A view of Rakaposhi from the valley is a different experience from trekking towards a mountain base camp.
Upper Hunza, or Gojal, adds Gulmit, Attabad Lake, Passu and village landscapes such as Ghulkin. The road corridor is scenic, but meaningful visits may include walks, photography pauses and local interpretation away from the car. Ask permission before entering homes or private orchards.
A lake activity, glacier-edge walk and suspension-bridge visit have different demands and rules. Follow local guidance and do not infer safety from a photograph. If adding Khunjerab, use the border guide and allow a separate high-altitude day when access permits.

Skardu, Shigar and Khaplu
Skardu is a practical Baltistan base, not a synonym for every destination in the region. Kachura’s lakes, the Shigar valley and Khaplu deserve separate travel allowances. Choose a few places per day and keep time for local walks or the heritage interpretation that interests you.
Shigar and Khaplu add architecture and village life to a landscape journey. The northern dunes provide a different setting, but dune walking or vehicle activities should be arranged only in permitted areas. Our desert guide distinguishes Katpana from Sarfaranga.
PTDC’s northern map lists Upper Kachura at about 34 km and Lower Kachura at about 29 km from Skardu. Treat these as approximate location references: city start, road condition, walking and activity stops change the day. They are not a promise of a fixed driving time.

Deosai and Fairy Meadows: understand the access
Deosai
Deosai is a high plateau national park, with PTDC describing an elevation around 4,000 m and July–August as a favourable general window. Snow clearance, weather and seasonal regulations determine actual access. A jeep excursion involves altitude and road time even without a long trek.
Fairy Meadows
The Raikot-side approach uses a steep local jeep road followed by walking. It is not a drive-to-hotel alternative to an ordinary Hunza stay. Clarify jeep time, the walk, accommodation and the intended viewpoint before selecting it for children or visitors who dislike exposed tracks.
Nanga Parbat Base Camp is an additional walking objective beyond simply reaching Fairy Meadows. In colder shoulder-season periods, snow and reduced services can make the approach unsuitable. A flight to Skardu and a lower-intensity route may be a better choice for some travellers, depending on the actual conditions.
Other northern places: choose by demand
| Place or region | Main appeal | Planning distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Naltar | Forest and lake landscapes | Local mountain-road access and suitable transport |
| Nagar and Rush Lake | High-country trekking | Rush Lake is a trek, not a roadside lake visit |
| Shimshal | Mountain village and remote valley | Longer rough-road approach; high treks are separate |
| Chitral and Kalasha valleys | Hindu Kush and living culture | Official advice and permissions require specific review |
| Baltoro and K2 Base Camp | Major Karakoram wilderness | Multi-day expedition, not a Skardu day outing |
For Chitral, Kashmir, Balochistan or other proposed extensions, assess current official travel advice individually. A national beautiful-places list should never imply that every region is equally accessible or suitable at the same time.
Distance, altitude and season
| Transfer | Approximate road distance | Time allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Gilgit–Karimabad | 95–110 km | 2–3 hours |
| Gilgit–Skardu | 200–240 km | 5–7 hours |
| Karimabad–Passu | 45–55 km | 1.5–2.5 hours |
These estimates exclude extended meals and sightseeing. Works, traffic and weather can increase them. Do not turn the Gilgit–Skardu transfer into a short drive merely because both places are on a northern itinerary.
Spring blossom and autumn colour are seasonal possibilities, not guaranteed peak dates. High trekking and plateau access have a shorter window than valley sightseeing. Temperatures differ between a warm afternoon in a town and a windy high pass. Use a current forecast for every overnight base and high excursion.
Build altitude adjustment into high activities and discuss suitability when necessary. Consult CDC’s altitude guidance for background. The height of a photographed summit is not the elevation at which you sleep.
A private route with time to enjoy it
For roughly a week, focus on Hunza or Baltistan rather than covering both with repeated long drives. For a longer journey, combine them with sensible transfer days and contingency around domestic flights. State the intended arrival and departure airports clearly.
Decide whether the purpose is photography, heritage, gentle walking or trekking. That choice affects daily pacing and the accommodation plan. Premium facilities may be limited in remote places; discuss the standard available instead of assuming a uniform city-hotel experience.
Use our culture guide, hiking guide and seasonal guide to refine the plan. The autumn gallery and spring and blossom gallery offer visual inspiration, with timing to be assessed for your year.
Frequently asked questions
Can I visit the north without trekking?
Yes, a route can focus on villages, forts, viewpoints and selected short walks. Clarify the physical demands of each excursion.
Is Fairy Meadows as easy to reach as Karimabad?
No. Its local jeep approach and walking section create different demands and comfort considerations.
Can Deosai be visited in every month?
No. High plateau access depends on snow, weather, road clearance and park arrangements.
Should I fit Hunza and Skardu into a short week?
A shorter visit is usually more comfortable with one main region. Combining both requires sufficient transfer and contingency time.
