Crossroads field guides · Punjab · Salt Range

Khewra Salt Mine is an underground visitor attraction in Pakistan’s Salt Range, with illuminated salt formations, brine pools and a mosque built from salt bricks. This guide explains what to see, how to plan the drive from Islamabad or Lahore, and which practical details to confirm before leaving.

Where is Khewra Salt Mine?

Khewra is north of Pind Dadan Khan in Jhelum District, Punjab. It belongs to the Salt Range rather than the high Himalayan valleys. That distinction matters when planning a Pakistan journey: this is a plains-and-hills excursion, with a different climate and travel rhythm from Hunza or Skardu.

The mine is operated by the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC). Its mining profile describes ancient salt-bearing layers, white, pink and red rock salt, and room-and-pillar extraction. In that system, supporting pillars remain between excavated rooms. Visitors follow a designated route rather than exploring the working mine. Read PMDC’s mine profile.

History: keep the story separate from the evidence

The often-repeated account of Alexander’s horses discovering salt is best treated as a historical tradition, rather than a precisely documented opening date for the present mine. A firmer visitor-history milestone is the ground-level tunnel developed by Dr Warth in 1872. PMDC’s visitor resort was inaugurated in April 2003. The present visitor route is only one part of this working mine.

What to see inside Khewra Salt Mine

Expect a managed underground route, with stops determined by the staff and the areas open that day. Ask your mine guide what the current visit includes before setting off.

The salt-brick mosque

Light passes through differently coloured salt bricks, making the structure a distinctive stop for visitors and photographers. Keep passages clear and follow the guide’s instructions around the display.

Brine pools and salt bridges

Illuminated pools show how salt, water and light interact underground. Stay on the designated path and respect barriers. Ask your guide about the chambers on the route and the role of water in salt mining.

Shish Mahal and the larger chambers

PMDC identifies an area of transparent pale-pink salt called Shish Mahal and a large chamber called Assembly Hall. Look for differences in the colour and translucency of the rock as you move between spaces. The guide can explain which surfaces are natural formations and which features have been shaped by people.

Railway, displays and the mining museum

PMDC lists a visitor electric train and a geological and mining museum. Check which facilities are operating that day. The train is a transport option, not a promise that every part of the visit can be completed without walking.

Khewra Salt Mine distances and driving times

Distances vary with the starting point and chosen road. The Associated Press of Pakistan reports approximately 200 km from Islamabad and 245 km from Lahore. Your actual distance will depend on your starting point and chosen route. See APP’s location reference.

One-way road planning estimates, excluding sightseeing and long meal stops
Starting pointDistance referenceTime to allow
IslamabadApproximately 200 kmAbout 3–4 hours
LahoreApproximately 245 kmAbout 4–5 hours

Driving times above are conservative Crossroads planning estimates, not guaranteed journey times. City traffic, local-road conditions, stops and motorway visibility can extend them. Confirm the route with your driver before travel.

The Punjab government describes access from the M2 motorway via Lilla interchange towards Pind Dadan Khan. The final approach is on local roads. Do not enter an unverified shortcut simply because a navigation app estimates a shorter arrival time. Punjab government location guide.

A day-trip planning rule: reserve the full day from either city. Two to three hours at the attraction is additional to the outward and return drive. A visit during an Islamabad–Lahore transfer adds a detour; it should not be treated as a quick motorway rest stop.

Khewra Salt Mine ticket prices and opening hours

The operator’s website lists daily visiting hours of 9:00 am–6:00 pm. That is the published schedule, not confirmation of same-day access. Ask PMDC about any closure, last admission time and train operation before departure.

Best time to visit, temperature and altitude

For a journey involving surface sightseeing, our preferred planning window is the cooler part of the year, roughly October to March. The mine environment and the outdoor drive are different: comfortable underground conditions do not remove heat, rain or poor visibility on the approach roads.

A 2025 research study at Khewra measured 18–20°C during its sampling. Treat that as a measured range, not a guarantee that every chamber stays at one temperature throughout the year. A Pakistan Meteorological Department study describes an elevation of approximately 288 m and variations in the underground environment.

SeasonWhat to plan for
Autumn & springLayers for changing outdoor conditions; daylight for the local-road approach.
WinterA warmer layer outside; check motorway fog and visibility before an early departure.
Summer & monsoonWater, sun protection outside, and a fresh road/access check after heavy rain.

Check a current forecast for Khewra and both ends of your drive shortly before travel. Outdoor conditions change with the season and can differ substantially from the mine interior.

Plan a comfortable visit

Walking, children and mobility

Wear closed shoes with grip and carry a light layer. Keep children close to an adult near rail tracks, pools and display areas. For wheelchair use, limited mobility or difficulty with enclosed spaces, ask the operator about the exact route, surfaces, boarding arrangements and assistance. Do not assume that a train ride makes the whole site step-free.

Photography and facilities

Ask about camera and tripod rules, then photograph from permitted areas without blocking the group. Leave time for tickets, toilets and refreshments before entering. Carry water for the road and keep essential belongings in a small bag rather than bringing large luggage underground.

A realistic order for the day

  • Before leaving: confirm access, published charges and the road route.
  • On arrival: buy tickets, check train availability and agree the visit with a mine guide.
  • Inside: follow the designated route and allow pauses for photographs.
  • Afterwards: take a meal or rest break before the return drive; add another site only if daylight and your pace allow.

Salt lamps and other souvenirs can be heavy and fragile. Check weight, packaging and airline baggage limits before buying. We make no therapeutic claims for a short mine visit or salt products.

Combine Khewra with a Pakistan heritage journey

Khewra can add geology and an underground experience to a route otherwise centred on forts, museums and religious heritage. The best combination depends on how many nights you have, rather than how many places can be listed in one day.

Our Mughal Heritage journey provides a starting point for Lahore and the wider cultural corridor. The Taxila, Gandhara and Peshawar heritage trail explores a different historical thread. Discuss adding Khewra to a private proposal; these links do not mean the mine is automatically included in every departure.

Keep Taxila for a separate day when a relaxed visit is the priority. For wider context, read our guide to historical places in Pakistan and Pakistan cultural heritage guide, or view the heritage gallery.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I allow at Khewra Salt Mine?

Our suggested allowance is two to three hours on site, with more time if there are ticket queues or train waits. Include the outward and return drive when planning a day trip.

Can I visit from Islamabad or Lahore in one day?

It can be planned as a full-day excursion from either city. Use the road-distance table above, check access and avoid adding several distant heritage sites to the same day.

What should I wear inside?

Closed walking shoes and a light layer are practical. The 2025 study measured 18–20°C during sampling, but conditions vary by chamber and the outside weather may be quite different.

Does the entry ticket include the train?

PMDC lists train charges separately from entry. Confirm current prices, eligibility and operation at the counter rather than assuming a combined ticket.

Is Khewra in the Himalayas?

No. It is in Punjab’s Salt Range. “Himalayan pink salt” is a commercial name and should not be used to locate the mine in the northern mountain valleys.
